Epoxy 330 Faceting Adhesive

Epoxy 330 | The Industry Standard Water-Clear Faceting Adhesive

Trusted by master gem cutters and hobbyists alike, Epoxy 330 is a premium, two-part rapid-cure adhesive specifically formulated for the lapidary arts. Known for its exceptional strength and crystal-clear finish, it is the go-to choice for bonding gemstones to dop sticks, joining delicate opal doublets, and repairing jewelry where a “hidden” bond is required.

Epoxy 330 Faceting Adhesive

Key Features

  • Optically Clear: Dries to a water-clear finish. It will not yellow over time, making it invisible when used for bonding transparent gemstones or inlay work.

  • Rapid Initial Set: Reaches a firm “set” in approximately 15 to 30 minutes at room temperature ($21^\circ\text{C}$ / $70^\circ\text{F}$), allowing you to move through your faceting sequence efficiently.

  • High-Bond Strength: Specifically engineered to withstand the high-speed friction and torque of faceting and grinding without the stone shifting or “flying off” the dop.

  • Heat & Chemical Resistant: Once fully cured, the bond remains stable during the heat generated by polishing and is resistant to most common lapidary coolants and cleaning agents.

Why Lapidarists Prefer Epoxy 330

Unlike standard hardware store epoxies, Epoxy 330 is formulated for precision. It has the perfect viscosity—thick enough to stay where you put it on the dop, but thin enough to spread evenly for a bubble-free bond on doublets. It is also easily “released” when the job is done by soaking in acetone or applying controlled heat, ensuring your finished gemstone is never damaged during removal.

Note: For the strongest bond, ensure both the gemstone and the dop stick are cleaned with alcohol to remove any oils or wax residue before application.

Here are the Best Practices for mixing and curing Epoxy 330, along with the essential Safety Data (SDS) highlights to ensure professional-grade results and a safe workspace.

Best Practices for Application & Curing

1. Preparation is Key

  • Surface Tension: Both the gemstone and the dop stick (or metal surface) must be 100% free of oils, wax, and fingerprints. Clean both surfaces with 99% isopropyl alcohol or acetone before applying.

  • The “Rough” Factor: For the strongest possible bond on metal dops, lightly scuff the tip of the dop with 400-grit sandpaper to give the epoxy more “tooth” to grip.

2. Precision Mixing

  • The 1:1 Rule: Squeeze out two equal-sized beads of Resin and Hardener side-by-side on a clean, non-porous surface (like a glass slide or a plastic mixing card).

  • Avoid Bubbles: Mix slowly in a circular motion for at least 60 seconds. Mixing too fast incorporates air bubbles, which can weaken the bond or show up in doublets.

  • Small Batches: Only mix what you need for the immediate task. Epoxy 330 has a relatively short “pot life” (working time) of about 5–10 minutes once mixed.

3. The Curing Process

  • Room Temperature: At $21^\circ\text{C}$ ($70^\circ\text{F}$), the bond will set in 15–30 minutes, but it is best to wait 2 hours before you begin heavy grinding.

  • Accelerated Curing: You can achieve a full cure in only 10 minutes by placing the bonded piece under a 100-watt incandescent bulb or a dedicated heat lamp. Do not exceed $65^\circ\text{C}$ ($150^\circ\text{F}$), as extreme heat can crack heat-sensitive stones like opals.

Safety Data (SDS) Highlights

CategoryPrecautionary Advice
VentilationUse in a well-ventilated area. Avoid breathing in concentrated vapors during the mixing and curing phase.
Skin ContactAvoid direct contact with skin. If contact occurs, wash immediately with soap and water. Do not use solvents like lacquer thinner to clean skin.
Eye ProtectionWear safety glasses. In case of eye contact, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
StorageStore tubes in a cool, dry place with caps tightly secured. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
RemovalTo break the bond after faceting, soak the assembly in Acetone or apply localized heat ($80^\circ\text{C}$+) to soften the resin.

Pro Tip: Avoiding “The Slip”

If you are bonding a stone to a dop, use a small piece of clay or a “dop station” to keep the stone perfectly centered while the epoxy sets. Even “5-minute” epoxies can allow a stone to sag or tilt slightly due to gravity before they fully harden.
